ARTIST BIO

Nick is a Townsville based soldier in his 19th year of service with the Australian Defence Force.

With no formal training or artistic education Nick finds it difficult to identify as an artist. However, as a ‘developing creator of art’ he finds inspiration and motivation to create works through a love of colour and nature.

His career in the ADF has afforded him the opportunity to view landscapes around the world; from the red sands of Woomera, the deep blues of the Coral Sea and the white snow-capped mountains in the Afghanistan desert. His experiences whilst deployed to Afghanistan in 2011 and 2012 contribute strong emotion to his Poppy series of works.

A common theme in Nick’s work, past and present, is the spiral. It is written that “ancient Celtic artists used the spiral as mind-altering creative process in which the act of creating a spiral in their work released their minds into a creative splendour’

Nick can relate to the spiritual characteristics of development, balance, surrender, holistic growth and heightened awareness that exist within the spiral. He describes the creation of his paintings as a release, an escape and an arrival. A culminating chaotic serenity.

Nick has developed a very unique and original abstract landscape style. His overhead perspectives are immersed in a vibrancy of colour, contrast and finer detail. Whilst his depictions are not always geographically correct in form or structure they evince the integrity and beauty of the Australian landscape.

Since completing his first canvas in early 2018, Nick has received the following awards;

  • Mission to Seafarers Maritime Art Award – Townsville in the heart of the City exhibition 2019 – ‘Hi Reef, I’m Rainforest.’
