ARTIST BIO

Leela is an artist based in Hahndorf in the beautiful Adelaide Hills in South Australia.

Inspired and taught from a young age by her grandfather Leela’s artistic journey began in oil paints painting quaint English cottages and historic local buildings. Leela continued to expand her skills with a focus on portraiture with pastel pencils, as well as dabbling in acrylic paints and clay sculpting.
Her current work with watercolours is inspired by and coincides with her passion for gardening, as well as a fascination with the magnificence of the natural world. She has a particular fascination in capturing the intricate beauty of the world’s insects and is driven to use her artistic voice to celebrate and build awareness around the importance of our tiny but mighty pollinators. Leela continues to explore the natural world, being inspired by different local community projects, as well as local native flora and fauna, to create new and exciting pieces of art.
Leela has exhibited her artwork in group exhibitions including the West Torrens Art Prize 2020, she was featured in the Adelaide Hills Herald Newspaper in the artist profile article ‘Insect Fascination’, and has completed many commissioned works including portraits, business and band logos and an EP cover design for the band Axe & The Ivory. She is currently working on a personal project writing and illustrating a children’s book about Australian endangered fauna.
